Supporting our Yemen appeal
Yemen is facing catastrophe beyond anything that we can imagine. The ongoing war has killed thousands of innocent civilians and famine has caused an alarming rate of food security, especially among children.
Nearly half of the population live on less than two dollars a day and social development indicators, such as child malnutrition, maternal mortality and educational attainment, remain extremely poor.
Yemen is also the most food insecure country in the Arab world and is amongst the top 10 least food-secure countries globally. The 2014 Global Hunger Index ranks Yemen 73 out of 81 countries analysed, indicating an “alarming” stage of food insecurity. Nevertheless, the 2014 Global Hunger Index was based on data extracted from previous years and does not take into consideration the impact of the 2015 Coalition war under the leadership of Saudi Arabia.
The on-going conflict has negatively impacted access to food for millions of vulnerable people. Supply of essential food commodities has been limited, leading to a rise in the prices of basic commodities. This is further complicated by a decline in purchasing power linked to the devaluation of the Yemeni Riyal. Inadequate nutrition coupled with limited access to clean water and sanitation and healthcare services can lead to increased morbidity, especially of children. The continuous rise in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) is only exacerbating a very severe situation.
